We love to see kids getting outside to enjoy the sunshine. Here are some ideas to keep them entertained outside:

-Set up a slackline for the kids to practice walking/balancing on
-Fill a waterproof bin with outdoor fun equipment: whiffle balls and bats, plastic golf clubs, tennis balls and rackets, Frisbees, hula hoops, bubbles, sidewalk chalk and other outdoor games and activities
-Set up a craft table or easel outside so your kids can draw, paint, craft or do homework in the fresh air
-Assemble a tent in the backyard and let the kids play “camping”
-Plant a garden or put some potted plants outside for the kids to care for
-Create an outdoor kitchen, complete with dishes and utensils for creating the most delicious mud pies
-Set up a sandbox, filled with beach toys, shovels, scoops and buckets
-Hang a hammock or swing for the kids to play on

Invasive Species of Nova Scotia:

Hemlock Woolly Adelgid (HWA) is currently a threat to forest ecosystems in Nova Scotia. When in the forest, keep an eye open for small, white, cotton-like balls on the underside of hemlock branches. If you see any, please report your sighting to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency.

HWA is very easily spread so do what you can to reduce the spread from one forest to the other. Please don't move wood (including firewood) to other forests.

A new initiative, Giants of Nova Scotia, is trying to help combat invasive species by creating a calendar with all proceeds from sales going to MTRI to help research and help prevent the spread of invasive species. Visit www.giantsofnovascotia.com for more information, and to enter the photo contest to have your forest photos featured in the calendar!

We do not want invasive species to spread, but we would love for this information to spread, so please share!
