  SILVICULTURE CRITERIA                                Mar 2001

               TREE PLANTING (SOFTWOOD ONLY)

To be eligible for funding, the planting site must conform  to the following criteria prior to treatment:

1. Stocking of natural softwood regeneration      <20% at 2.4 x 2.4m spacing 
                     (height >10cm)

2. Time since final harvest             2 full growing seasons

3. Site                                             LC 4 or better

To be eligible for funding, the treated area must conform to the following criteria:

1. Density of planted trees                > 1000 planted trees per ha

2. Density of planted + natural trees  1500-2500 planted + natural trees per ha

3. Stocking of crop trees                    >80 % at 2.4 x 2.4m spacing.

4. Crop tree species                          RS, BS, WS, NS, BF, WP,  EH, WB, YB, WAS, RO, SM, RM. Other species may be present but must constitute < 10% of the post planting composition.

5. Quality                                          Seedlings must be cared for onsite;
Correct planting tool must be used:
Seedlings must be properly planted with due regard given to presence of mineral soil and duff layer;
Scattered live overstory trees may be present at  <10 trees/ha; clumps of trees are preferable;
Both planted and natural crop trees must be healthy and free of insect and disease damage;
