BROWN SPRUCE LONGHORN BEETLE ZONE
WOOD SALVAGE INITIATIVE
The
government of Nova Scotia is implementing an initiative to enable the
harvesting of wood fibre from forest stands damaged by Hurricane Juan, and
located within the Brown Spruce Longhorn Beetle (BSLB) zone.
The
movement of wood in the BSLB zone continues to be regulated by the Canadian
Food Inspection Agency (CFIA).
The Province will be entering
into agreements with specific harvest operators to encourage them to salvage
damaged wood within the BSLB zone. These harvest operators will have been
authorized by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) to undertake harvest
work within the BSLB zone. Currently, the first CFIA authorized harvest
operator (Neenah Paper - Pictou Mill) will be processing primarily for
softwood pulpwood chips.
The Province has engaged the
Association for Sustainable Forestry (ASF), as its Program Coordinator, to
administer the initiative, and be involved in the identification of eligible
damaged forest stands for consideration and treatment by the CFIA authorized
harvest operator(s).
If
you are an owner of hurricane damaged forest lands, within the BSLB zone, and
are interested in having your land considered for this initiative, please
complete the BSLB wood salvage initiative application form, see below.
